DirecTV tees up more 4K Ultra HD coverage of The Masters

DirecTV is doubling down on its 4K Ultra HD coverage of The Masters tournament this week.

DirecTV viewers with the compatible equipment and channel package will see two channels of live 4K TV coverage produced by CBS. Channel 105 will feature Amen Corner and channel 106 will show holes 15 and 16. Coverage will include all four rounds of the tournament airing April 6-9, according to a news release.

DirecTV is also throwing in special viewing features for viewers not watching in 4K. “The Masters Experience” will feature an HD Mosaic displaying four screens of live coverage on one channel (701). Channels 702-705 will showcase ESPN and CBS network coverage, along with two featured groups, Amen Corner and Holes 15 and 16.

“We’re expanding DirecTV’s live 4K coverage of the Masters Tournament this year,” said Dan York, chief content officer of the AT&T Entertainment Group, in a statement. “With our 4K broadcast, we want TV viewers to have that visceral experience of sitting just behind the ropes or watching as a patron at Amen Corner. It’s a trip well worth taking.”

The expanded 4K coverage comes after DirecTV last year aired the first live 4K broadcast of The Masters.

DirecTV has been an early mover in producing live 4K content. The operator again this year intends to air MLB games in 4K after last year’s planned MLB 4K broadcasts ran into some hiccups.

"We want to ensure our MLB Network Showcase games in 4K are delivered at the high quality we expect to relay to our customers. During our final validation tests prior to each game we found the 4K signal we received was not on par with our expectations. While we aired the games in HD on a separate channel we elected not to broadcast those games in 4K," DirecTV said in a statement. "We've worked with MLB Network and their production partners to resolve their 4K technical issues and we're ready to proceed with the scheduled 4K broadcast of the games this weekend. What this shows is our MLB collaboration is very strong and the innovation around this program is ahead of the curve."
