NBC News reportedly pursuing 25% stake in Euronews

NBC News will reportedly take a 25% stake in Euronews for about $30 million, giving the news organization a presence in Europe.

According to Bloomberg, Deborah Turness, president of NBC News’ U.S.-based operations, has been tapped to run the new international operation. “Today” show chief Noah Oppenheim will take over for Turness as NBC News president, and both Oppenheim and Turness will report to NBC News chair Andy Lack.

The report said the Euronews deal will give NBC access to an additional 277 million households across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

With Euronews—which will be renamed NBC Euronews, according to the New York Times—NBC will have a better footing with which to take on CNN in Europe.

The move to expand internationally by NBC News comes amid reports that the organization is considering a shift in tone. According to Page Six, NBC and MSNBC want to be the “next Fox News.”

The push toward a more conservative slant jells with NBC News’ recent hires of former Fox News hosts Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren, who will host an hour on the “Today” show and “For the Record” on MSNBC, respectively.

As the report pointed out, however, NBC reps denied any inclination toward more conservative news content and said the only thing NBC is “‘tilting toward’ is even more good journalism.”

Interestingly, as NBC News moves into Europe and considers a more conservative slant at MSNBC and NBC, Fox News' parent company 21st Century Fox is looking to buy outright European pay-TV provider Sky.

BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield pointed out during Sky and Discovery’s recent carriage impasse—which was eventually resolved with a new deal—that Fox owns channels including National Geographic that directly compete with Discovery networks.

The conflict did not ultimately impede a new carriage deal between Sky and Discovery but it is possible it could impact future agreements between Euronews and Sky.

According to Advanced Television, Sky and Euronews renewed their carriage agreement in 2013.
