While flashy 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home services may have a limited market, they are generating demand for lower speed tiers. According to FierceTelecom, ILECs including CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), Consolidated and TDS Telecom are finding that the 1 Gbps boom is creating a "halo effect" for speed tiers ranging from 10 to 100 or 200 Mbps and above.
