Actiontec

Based: Sunnyvale, CA

1993

Why it's fierce: Actiontec does not fit the typical mold for a Fierce 15 company, it isn't young by tech standards (founded in 1993) and its client list already boasts big names like Qwest, Verizon, AOL, NTL, Dell, IBM and HP. Regardless, IPTV is a new sector that builds on many existing ones, and companies like Actiontec will reconfigure their priorities to target the IPTV industry. That said, the company has been scoring some significant customer wins: Verizon being first and foremost. They have an FTTP gateway that is certainly gaining traction in North America, and they also offer a DSL gateway.

What to look for: Although this company may be the least likely "up-and-coming" company on this list, I think that they will emerge as a leader in the gateway arena for IPTV.
