Amino launches companion STB for pay-TV OTT play at CES

LAS VEGAS--Amino Communications is rolling out a new "companion" set-top box at CES 2011 this week that will help network operators add over-the-top delivery options to their established pay-TV and broadcast offerings, addressing the need for operators to adapt to the changing demands and viewing habits of their customers who, increasingly, want a WebTV option.

Amino's Freedom Jump, based on the company's Freedom hybrid/OTT media center, complements existing cable and satellite STBs, and offers access to content available on the open Internet including applications, movie-on-demand services, catch-up TV, music services and social networking. The Freedom Jump is powered by the Intel Atom processor CE4100 and MeeGo for the TV, and has been designed to support common Internet formats such as Adobe Flash together with high definition 1080p capability.

It includes HDMI input to connect the existing service provider's STB to the Freedom Jump, has a wireless option also enables connectivity to content from other networked devices in the home, as well as an option that allows game controllers to be added via Bluetooth.

"There is a real gap in the market for a powerful low cost device that works with--rather than competes against--operators' existing pay-TV devices," Amino CEO Andrew Burke said. "Initial feedback from operators has been very positive. The Freedom Jump minimizes costly product change outs, whilst at the same time offering a new layer of content to customers."
