Arris (Nasdaq: ARRS) has apparently begun spewing products from the "pipeline full of new products" chairman-CEO Robert Stanzione promised would be "scheduled for deployment later this year."
Stanzione made his prediction during an earnings call in August. More recently, Arris said it was collaborating with Sling Media and introducing a streaming device that lets service providers offer up to four simultaneous live HD channels and recorded content as part of a "comprehensive multiscreen experience for their subscribers."
The only qualifier to getting and deploying the unit is that the service provider must be deploying the Arris Whole Home Solution, because the new Sling-powered box works with the Arris Media Gateway.
"Sling Media is a pioneer and leader in content place shifting," said John Burke, senior vice president of corporate strategy and development and president of the cloud solutions business at Arris, noting that the merged product play is designed to help service providers "keep pace with consumer demand."
In addition to announcing the product, the two companies gave a glimpse of the types of uses the box would get. A recent Sling customer survey found, among other things, that live content is most watched by those who use the company's Slingbox product both inside and outside the home; nearly two-thirds of Slingbox users use the product frequently and three-quarters of all usage takes place outside the home; and that apple tablets and smartphones are the preferred devices for accessing content via Slingbox.
"Sling Media technology is the best way to extend the entire living room TV experience anywhere," said Michael Hawkey, vice president and general manager of Sling Media in the joint press release. "Together we will deliver an unrivaled multiscreen video solution to MSOs and MVPDs who are looking to add more value to their current customer offerings and extend the entertainment experience beyond the living room TV."
