BigBand plays up video control plane

In what looks like the latest development that could help cable TV companies move toward IPTV set-ups, BigBand Networks has announced Converged Video Exchange, video control plane software that allows cable TV companies to support content distribution to IPTV set-top boxes along with their distribution over their traditional RF-based systems. Light Reading's Cable Digital News reports that the video control plane can be adapted to deliver linear and on-demand video services to non-STB devices, too, such as mobile phones.

IPTV delivery and IP STBs increasingly are being positioned at cable TV companies as they evolve their network strategies to DOCSIS 3.0 and look for ways to compete with the evolving video offerings of telcos. Bringing IP flexibility into the mix also will help them to better manage bandwidth resources.
