France's third largest telecommunications service provider, Bouygues Telecom (Euronext: EN), plans to add "greater context to its IPTV offering" by using the Motorola Mobility Medios Merchandiser platform.
"We were looking for a solution to rapidly address new content services for our new IPTV offers and Motorola's Merchandiser solution allowed us to reach our commitments in term of date and quality," Thibaut Keraval, head of the service platform department at Bouygues Telecom said in a statement.
Interestingly, Motorola Mobility's new parent company Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) just announced that it would launch Google TV, available via a Sony (NYSE: SNE) set-top box, in France, among other international markets where it is expected to compete with incumbent cable and IPTV providers.
Of course that's the kind of competition that no doubt led Bouygues to the Moto technology in the first place.
"In this new world with an abundance of content and multiplicity of choices, content management is a core competency of IPTV operators," said Yves Caseau, executive vice president of technologies, innovation and services at Bouygues, noting that the Motorola Merchandiser technology "fits our requirements very well and delivers to our customers the proper combination of recommendation, meta-data enrichments as well as efficient browsing and delivery."
According to the news release, the Medios Merchandiser "simplifies the subscriber browsing experience" by personalizing bundle marketing and "encouraging impulse purchases and upgrades with targeted offers, pricing and discounts." The idea, Motorola said, is to market an ever-expanding catalog of products and "help service providers to continue to monetize the content they offer."
"It is not enough to simply have the best content. Service providers are looking for ways to ensure their content is discoverable and easily accessed," said Steve McCaffery, vice president and general manager of Motorola Mobility's home business EMEA. The platform, he continued, "represents another way that we continue to drive the evolution of TV and a smart, simple connected home."
