Cablevision Systems has begun deploying remote storage DVRs (RS-DVRs) with limited functionality in some customers' homes, following a plan announced by COO Tom Rutledge in a February fourth quarter earnings call. More details will probably emerge during the next earnings call May 6.
Also called a network DVR, the RS-DVR was the subject of heated court action for the past several years as studios fought to keep their content out of the so-called Internet cloud where it would be remotely stored. The matter was finally settled last summer when the Supreme Court declined to hear a studio appeal and Cablevision started making serious plans to roll out the technology.
