CBS weighs entry into 3D market

Despite studies that show 3D TV is struggling for acceptance in the U.S. market, broadcaster CBS says it may bring several of its shows, converted from 2D to 3D, to a 24-hour pay-TV network.

Broadcasting & Cable is reporting that the network already is demonstrating the content, but quotes another CBS exec as saying the experiment "is all very preliminary," with no "solid plans to launch a network."

The technology being used to convert the 2D shows to 3D is from Dynamic Digital Depth and costs about $10,000 per hour of programming, a pittance in Hollywood.

Studies from Informa Telecoms & Media and SNL Kagan have disagreed over the likelihood of 3D TV going mainstream, but both said the technology eventually will be available on a broad scale because CE manufacturers can include it in TV sets at low cost.

SNL Kagan maintains consumers will adopt the technology as more content becomes available, especially live sports and theatrical films.
