Comcast rolls out DOCSIS 3.1 in Boston, preps to enter Philly and other East Coast locales

Comcast has expanded its reach of DOCSIS 3.1-powered gigabit broadband service into Boston, with plans to also soon deploy the service in its home base of Philadelphia and other East Coast cities including Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

Comcast continues to adjust prices for the 1-gig downstream/35 Mbps upstream service, depending on the market.

In the newly entered Eastern markets, the MSO is charging a base rate of $104.95 a month and a promotional price of $79.99 a month for those who take a one-year contract.

In previously deployed markets, Comcast had offered the service at $70 a month with no caps, if customers agreed to a three-year contract. The cable operator priced the service at $140 a month with a 1-terabyte data cap for those who don’t agree to the contract.

Other East Coast cities seeing DOCSIS 3.1 deployment will include Charlottesville, Va.; and Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pa.

Comcast recently launched the D:3.1 service in San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Colorado and Oregon.

Markets coming soon include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Vermont, West Virginia and New Jersey.
