Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) will participate in the FCC's 600 MHz incentive auction, bidding under the entity CC Wireless Investment LLC, the cable company confirmed.
The FCC released a list of 104 applicants — 69 complete applications and 35 incomplete applications. Notably included in the incomplete applications is Liberty Global, which filed but will not participate in the auction, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Dish Network's (NASDAQ: DISH) name is notably absent from the list, as are the designated entity names it used during last year's AWS-3 auction, Northstar Wireless and SNR Wireless. However, as FierceWireless notes, one company on the list -- ParkerB Wireless -- is registered under Dish's Denver-area address.
According to New Street Research, Mediacom also plans to participate. However, company officials would not confirm these plans, or disclose whether there's an entity on the list that represents their MSO.
Also notable, meanwhile, was the exclusion of Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR), which had earlier stated plans to participate.
As for Comcast, the company confirmed during its fourth-quarter earnings call in February that it plans to participate in forward portion of the auction. But the MSO didn't indicate that it would walk away with a haul of new spectrum licenses.
Comcast had said earlier that its NBCUniversal unit would likely give up spectrum to the FCC as part of the incentive auction, but it has been circumspect about its intentions to buy any spectrum at auction. CEO Brian Roberts said the company "is taking a paddle" in the upcoming auction but is only considering acquiring spectrum that can give it more "strategic flexibility" rather than aggressively pursuing a wireless service.
Also speaking during Comcast's fourth-quarter earnings call, cable-division CEO Neil Smit said that the company is looking at "hand-off" technology for its 13.3 million Wi-Fi hotspots as it continues to explore entry into the wireless business.
