Based: Newark-Fremont, CA
Why it's fierce: Recent months have been good for Tel Aviv-based Coppergate. In August AT&T announced it planned to use the company's HomePNA technology to distribute its U-Verse TV, AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet and in the future, voice over IP. The deal puts Coppergate on the Who's Who list of IPTV since its technology will become a part of what will become one of the largest IPTV deployments in the world. Coppergate has been working closely with AT&T and its partners: Alcatel, Microsoft Qwire and Motorola to work out the bugs and get U-Verse rolling. Coppergate boasts investors like Motorola Ventures, Carmel Ventures, Tamir Fishman and the Challenge Fund.
What to look for: Rumor has it that another big service provider may be fed up with multimedia over coax and might be looking for a more rugged in-home distribution method.
