Having slowly edged out the incumbent broadcast networks over the last decade for TV programming's most coveted "Good Housekeeping" symbol, cable networks absolutely dominated the nominations for the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Indeed, among major categories, only CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory and ABC multi-camera comedy Modern Family managed to get series nominations, with HBO (four series nominations) and AMC (two series noms) most heavily represented in the highest-profile best drama and comedy series categories.
Also, an important harbinger of Emmys future: Netflix saw both House of Cards (Drama Series) and Orange Is the New Black (Comedy Series) receive major nominations. In all, Netflix shows received 31 nominations this year.
Why does this matter? Emmy nominations and wins are important markers of "quality" programming, and outside of ratings points, offer the most important branding differentiator among programming networks. In other words, Emmy street cred undoubtedly comes up during negotiations for broadcast retransmission fees.
