ESPN may take pro soccer coverage over the top next year, Skipper says

ESPN president John Skipper told a press gather last week that the channel might experiment with a subscription-based VOD channel next year that won't require users to have a pay TV service. The Disney-owned sports channel would be dipping its toes into such a la carte distribution by limiting it to Major League Soccer, which commands only a tiny fraction of overall pro-sports viewing in the U.S. But it would mark the first time pay TV's top programmer unbundled any of its offerings.
