FCC: Actual vs. advertised speed gap closing

Back in 2009, research of actual broadband service speeds versus the speeds advertised by broadband ISPs showed huge discrepancies with the majority of services barely reaching 50 percent of the speeds advertised. The findings fueled the Federal Communication Commission's discussion of a National Broadband Plan, and the FCC demanded further study of the issue.

Two years later, it appears that broadband ISPs across the board have vastly improved performance and closed the gap between actual and advertised speeds. Now, the majority of services are within 80 percent of advertised speeds, with the average of cable TV companies tested attaining 93 percent, according to the FCC.
