Attempting to mimic the advanced advertising success it's had on the Internet, Google Fiber (NASDAQ: GOOG) will begin to offer targeted local TV ads in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo.
According to a Google product forum posting, the campaign will begin "in the next few weeks," with Google Fiber TV subscribers seeing targeted local ads in existing commercial breaks, alongside national ads.
"Cable TV providers generally offer some type of TV ad delivery as part of their local services," the posting reads. "… Fiber TV ads will be digitally delivered in real time and can be matched based on geography, the type of program being shown (sports or news, for example), or viewing history," the posting adds.
"Like digital ads, advertisers will only pay for ads that have been shown, and can limit the number of times an ad is shown to a given TV," Google Fiber further notes.
Viewers can opt out of this in settings.
Speaking to Ad Week, an unnamed source said, "The tracking at this point is pretty unsophisticated," noting that Google has been somewhat cautious in terms of customer privacy.
Google Fiber ended 2014 with only about 27,000 subscribers spread across Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan.
