Informa: 29.7 million IPTV subs last year

Informa Telecoms & Media is this week hosting the lead show in its IPTV World Forum series, the London conference that many see as the international star of the IPTV conference circuit. The event also presents Informa with the stage to announce its latest IPTV market research.

The research firm is saying this week that global IPTV subscriptions totaled 29.7 million at the end of last year, having increased about 10.3 million from 2008. Emerging markets are giving the IPTV subscriber numbers a boost, though about two-thirds of the global subscriptions still are found in just four markets: France, the U.S., China and South Korea.

In terms of global market share, Informa's estimation of about 5 percent share for IPTV service lined up closely with the 4.9 percent figure provided last week by research firm SNL Kagan--perhaps surpising in that the various market analysts rarely come to the same conclusions about anything.
