Mediacom taps Arris to backbone Wi-Fi network

Arris International has announced that it is supplying its Carrier-Class Service Provider Wi-Fi Solution to Mediacom as the fifth largest U.S. cable company builds out its Wi-Fi network in a dozen cities.

The Arris hosted solution integrates products from vendor partners including Ruckus, Aptilo Networks and Benu Networks. It leverages Mediacom’s existing wireless infrastructure to deliver Wi-Fi services quickly and at scale, without requiring large upfront capital expenditures.

It integrates all of the operator’s wireless assets into a single, centrally managed Wi-Fi network, allowing subscribers single sing-on roaching within Mediacom’s footprint.

“Arris’ Wi-Fi technology and expertise is enabling us to address the demand for carrier-grade wireless services in our key markets," said Mediacom CTO JR Walden, in a statement. "By hosting this solution for us, Arris is giving Mediacom the freedom to scale to new customers and services at our own pace, without having to make big investments in new infrastructure."

Mediacom spokesman Thomas Larsen told FierceCable that deployments are underway in Columbia and Jefferson City, Missouri; Moline, East Moline, Rock Island and Silvis, Illinois; Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa; Savage, Minnesota; and Valdosta, Georgia.

"The first major test of the service occurred last week during the PGA’s John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois," Larsen added. "We had over 17,000 unique users access the service over the course of the tournament. It really showcased the potential for the product, and provided a major benefit to the spectators attending the event."

"Our collaboration with Mediacom is facilitating a new era of growth by building strategically on top of their existing network to broaden their Wi-Fi service offerings," said Dan Whalen, president of Arris’ network & cloud group, also in a statement. "This deployment showcases premium wireless Access Point technology by Ruckus as well as the advantage of Arris’ hosted solutions in minimizing capital expenditures while accelerating time-to-market with new services. Our partnership combines Mediacom's networks and our technology to allow Mediacom to extend its influence beyond traditional markets and support new verticals."
