Mobile video: Outside cable, everyone's on the move

While cable tries to get its mobile wireless act together--although Clearwire appears to be making some headway--the space is still dominated by "traditional" mobile video players like MobiTV and FLO TV and less traditional entrants like the broadcasters.

Both Mobi and FLO used NAB this week to introduce enhancements to their existing mobile video platforms. FLO, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of telco provider Qualcomm, added new applications that integrate Web-based content and social media, including more interactive content. Mobi and LG Electronics subsidiary Triveni Digital, also demonstrated technology that the companies said enables "new interactive possibilities."

Broadcasters, on the other hand, are less interested in enhanced applications and more interested in just getting their signals out to mobile devices. The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) will launch a Mobile DTV Consumer Showcase May 3 with nine TV stations transmitting more than 20 broadcast programs to a handful of specially outfitted mobile devices.
