The Broadband Forum and long-time market research partner Point Topic announced second-quarter 2009 global broadband market numbers at the Broadband World Forum Europe event in Paris this week. The report also included the latest information on worldwide IPTV acceptance. At the end of the quarter, there were about 26.9 million IPTV customers worldwide, including about 12.4 million in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (all counted as a single sector) and just over 5 million in North America.
The latter number means that North America now accounts for almost 20 percent of IPTV subscribers worldwide, noted in the Broadband Forum/Point Topic press release announcing the numbers as a significant threshold for a market regions still thought of as nascent. North America gained about 2.3 million IPTV customers since the second quarter of 2008, according to the research.
