RCN teams with TiVo

Alternative cable TV operator RCN plans to offer the TiVo DVR capability as its primary DVR service starting next year. The TiVo system's technology will be integrated with RCN's set-top boxes, connecting with RCN's video-on-demand system and also piping in Internet video content from various partners. Other cable TV operators also have dabbled with the so-called "ported" TiVo capability. RCN has about 368,000 video subscribers.

As TiVo is looking to work more closely with cable TV and telco TV partners, expect more such variations on the traditional TiVo platform, which could ultimately spell trouble for other standalone DVR boxes.
