RGB Networks debuts just-in-time packaging for streaming video

RGB Networks has introduced new "just-in-time" packaging (JITP) capabilities to its TransAct Packager encoding solution. According to RGB, the technology allows video providers to deliver multiple profiles of a video stream without prepackaging the content ahead of time. The JITP tech packages programs in real time based on the specific device requesting the content. The solution supports Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Smooth Streaming, Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS), and MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG DASH).

One of the major benefits to just-in-time packaging is the storage savings for video service providers. When providers pre-encode content into different formats, they have to store each version of a program until a user requests it. With the size of VoD libraries on the rise, that can add up to a significant amount of storage space required. By instead turning to on-the-fly packaging, providers can improve storage efficiencies and cut costs.

RGB says it will demonstrate the new JITP technology at the NAB Show later this month. In a statement, director of product marketing Andy Salo noted:

"We've worked closely with several large service providers over the last year to help expand their TV Everywhere trials and deployments and our new just-in-time packaging technology was specifically developed to help accelerate their rollout of place- and time-shifted services. Leveraging what was already a unique packager product, the addition of on-the-fly packaging to our TransAct Packager opens up new opportunities for video service providers to deploy large-scale VOD and NDVR applications across multiple devices, providing them with yet another compelling service to ensure subscriber retention."
