SCTE U.S. and SCTE U.K. form peace treaty to address brand confusion

Two engineering-focused telecom industry trade groups sharing the same acronym have announced the forging of a Memorandum of Understanding to avoid brand confusion and stay off each other's turf.

The U.S.-residing Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and the UK's Society for Broadband Professionals both operate under the acronym "SCTE." This overlap has, in the past, created a number of acrimonious interactions.

In their joint announcement, the two trade orgs didn't release a whole lot of detail in terms of how they'll work more collaboratively. But they will continue to operate under different brands for any international-facing operations.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, for example, operates globally as the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE). And the Society of Broadband Professionals uses the moniker Broadband Training Limited (BTL) when it ventures overseas.

"The intent of our two organizations is to ensure that cable and broadband operators and technology partners have access to the training resources they need to make the most of those opportunities," said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers.

"Our two societies share a common goal of improving engineering standards and skills throughout our industry," added Michael Thornton, president, Society for Broadband Professionals. "Eliminating confusion between our brands is the first step towards global collaboration that can help the industry to maintain – and even increase – its competitive edge."
