SPOTLIGHT: SDV on rise, BigBand still hurting


Switched digital video is one of several technologies that cable TV companies are looking toward to improve the efficiency and revenue potential of their services and their ability to compete with telcos offering IPTV services. Time Warner Cable and Cablevision both recently announced progress in their SDV deployments.

Meanwhile, BigBand Networks, one of the key vendors support SDV, continues to be in a tough spot financially. The company said last week it is laying off about 5% of its workforce, or about 20 people, after cutting 15% of its workforce just last year. still, the vendor posted first quarter 2008 revenue growth to $39.9 million, from $30.7 million in the first quarter of 2007.
