Thomson to buy Thales unit for â‚¬130M

French IPTV solutions provider Thomson has agreed to acquire business unit Thales Broadcast and Media (TBM) from Thales for €130 million. The addition of the unit brings VOD, mobile TV and digital TV and radio broadcasting equipment development to Thomson, which now claims a full end-to-end IPTV solution. The acquisition enables Thomson to offer everything from the software and distribution infrastructure to IPTV set-top boxes. Analysts say Thomson could reap some short-term opportunities from the imminent switch of analog cable to digital terrestrial transmission and the equipment needed for the change. Earlier in the month Thomson announced its plan to acquire Japanese HD video editing software developer Canopus.
