Time Warner Cable to launch TWC TV app on Microsoft's Xbox 360

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is bringing its TV application to Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox, making it possible for consumers to access 300 live TV channels on the Xbox 360. In addition, the company said it will add video-on-demand functionality to the app later this year.

The service will only be available to existing Time Warner Cable customers who subscribe to the Xbox Live Gold. However, Mike Angus, senior vice president and general manager of video for Time Warner Cable, said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that there are "tens of millions of boxes out there with our customers already." Indeed, Microsoft said this month that it had sold about 76 million Xbox consoles.

Time Warner Cable has been aggressive in launching its TV application on a variety of platforms including smartphones, tablets and even Roku set-top boxes. In addition, the company announced earlier this month that it will make its TWC TV app available on connected TVs from Samsung this summer.

But Time Warner Cable is not the first cable company to offer its TV app via the Xbox. Last year, Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) launched an Xbox 360 app for its Xfinity TV. In addition, the cable company also recently launched its Xfinity TV remote app for Microsoft Windows phone (see related story).
