Liberty Global's UPC Hungary is deploying a cloud-based delivery system from ActiveVideo Networks that will deliver YouTube and a range of other apps to legacy set-tops. UPC is offering customers access to more than 20 apps including YouTube, Google Maps, Picasa and Flickr as well as a slew of games via the company's legacy set-top boxes.
UPC TV Apps will be available to the company's 1.5 million homes passed by the end of 2014.
ActiveVideo's StreamCast, introduced in April, is a crucial component to the company's CloudTV platform converting user interfaces, video and other content from the web and formats that can be displayed on non-IP boxes, the company said.
The announcement comes as cable operators around the world are grappling with way to blent over-the-top content with traditional TV offerings.
In a prepared statement, UPC Hungary CEO Severina Pascu said, "I'm very proud that an innovative idea originating from our engineers could come true to support every customer in watching online content on their TV in the most simple and convenient way possible. With this development, the marriage of television and internet becomes a reality for everyone.
