Akamai (Nasdaq: AKAM) has officially announced its new line of managed and licensed content delivery network offerings targeted at operators looking to monetize traffic and reduce network costs.
The announcement of the Aura Network Solutions comes after a year of development.
Akamai said it initially plans to provide operators with an option for a managed CDN, following up later this year with a licensed version. Both are being pitched to fixed line and mobile network operators.
The managed CDN is a turnkey CDN with dedicated capacity to an operator's business that is managed by Akamai on behalf of the operator, the company said. The licensed version will include edge-server software licensed to the operator, allowing it to build and manage its own CDN capacity inside its network. The software will be designed to be deployed on standalone servers or be integrated with third-party network elements.
In both cases, Operator CDNs will be architected to federate with the Akamai Intelligent Platform to provide the operator with global reach for its content delivery business. Operators can also utilize Aura Network Solutions to deliver advanced services to their subscribers and enterprises, providing a robust set of features delivered upon proven Akamai technology.
"Network operators view content delivery technologies as strategic and highly complementary to their high speed data businesses," said Robert Blumofe, SVP of the Akamai Platform Division. "CDNs provide operators a way to manage network costs and offer new services to enhance revenues and support the subscriber adoption of video and other content on a multitude of IP-connected devices. With this announcement, Akamai is entering the business of creating CDN solutions specifically for network operators and helping them federate those CDNs by connecting to our global Intelligent Platform."
