AwesomenessTV signs movie deal with Netflix, launches news brand

AwesomenessTV has a movie deal in place with Netflix to go along with several series renewals and the upcoming launch of "Awesomeness News," a news brand targeting Generation Z audiences.

Awesomeness Films will release its Netflix original “You Get Me,” staring Bella Thorne, Halston Sage and Taylor John Smith, on June 16. According to Variety, Awesomeness is also queuing up new seasons of “Freakish” on Hulu, “Foursome” on YouTube Red, “Guidance” and “t@gged” on Verizon’s Go90 and “The Commute” on AwesomenessTV.

Awesomeness News, which will be available on AwesomenessTV platforms, will target an audience of viewers born on or around the year 2000 with political, environmental and social news content.

Awesomeness’ majority owner is Comcast/Universal now that the cable/programming giant bought DreamWorks. In addition to Comcast’s 51% stake, Verizon owns 24.5% and Hearst owns 25%.

Last year, Verizon decided to purchase a stake in Awesomeness after previously making the company a programming partner for its Go90 video platform.

"In addition to delivering compelling scripted and nonscripted series with high production values, AwesomenessTV has demonstrated an ability to zero in on programming that Gen Z and millennials want to watch," said Marni Walden, executive VP and president of product and new business innovation for Verizon. "The content AwesomenessTV has produced for go90 has exceeded all our expectations with shows such as Guidance and Top Five Live. That's why we want to be in the AwesomenessTV business."

As Awesomeness works to build its digital networks and distribution, another NBCUniversal property is transitioning. Sprout, one of NBCU’s struggling cable networks, will soon become Universal Kids and expand its programming to include formats like reality and to appeal to audiences ages 2-11.
