Discovery signs sports streaming deal with Amazon Prime in Germany and Austria

Amazon Prime members in Germany and Austria will soon have access to live Bundesliga football and other sports thanks to a new deal with Discovery’s Eurosport.

Prime members can subscribe to the Eurosport Player channel on Prime Video for 4.99 ($5.83) per month. Eurosport Player will be available through the Prime Video app on smart TVs, iOS and Android devices, and Amazon's Fire tablets, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, or by signing up online through Amazon Channels. The service comes with a seven-day free trial.

Eurosport Player provides access to Bundesliga live Friday night matches, as well as five Sunday and all Monday matches. Subscribers can also watch other programming including Grand Slam Tennis (Australian Open, French Open, U.S. Open), MotoGP and the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

“We are delighted to offer our millions of Prime members in Germany and Austria access to live premium sports, including Bundesliga football on Eurosport Player via Amazon Channels,” said Alex Green, managing director of Amazon Channels Europe, in a statement. “At 4.99 Euros per month, with no long term commitment and cancellable anytime, Prime members can enjoy Bundesliga matches and other premium sports at exceptional value and in the most flexible and easy way across all of their favorite devices and screens. This is great news for sports fans.”

“Discovery is excited to partner with Amazon to bring our premium sport to new and existing fans. As the new home of Bundesliga, Eurosport Player will deliver a more engaging, more accessible and more affordable experience than ever before. This partnership helps us to deliver the ambition to give fans the opportunity to watch the teams and players they love, live through Amazon Channels,” said Susanne Aigner-Drews, senior vice president and general manager for GSA, in a statement.

Of course, Amazon set another big sports deal this year in the U.S., winning the rights to stream NFL Thursday Night Football games. The 11 games, for which Amazon reportedly spent $50 million, will be available to U.S.-based Prime subscribers.

This article was updated to indicate Amazon is streaming 11 NFL games, not 10.
