As might have been expected, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Fiber came out on top in the January ISP carrier rankings compiled and released by Netflix Nasdaq: NFLX).

The 1 Gbps service in Kansas City delivered average speeds of 3.02 Mbps for Netflix streams, far outdistancing second place Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) Optimum, which jumped from fifth to second with a 2.24 Mbps rate. Suddenlink climbed five spots to finish third with a 2.08 Mbps average, just slightly better than Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) (which dropped two spots) at 2.05 Mbps and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS, which dropped a spot to fifth with 2.04 Mbps.
"These ratings reflect the average performance of all Netflix streams on each ISP's network," wrote Joris Evers, director of corporate communications at Netflix, explaining the rankings on a corporate blog.
The speeds are "well below the peak performance due to many factors including home Wi-Fi, the variety of devices our members use, and the variety of encodes we use to deliver the TV shows and movies we carry," he continued.
Those factors, though, did not affect the rankings which "are a good indicator of the consistent performance typically experienced across all users on an ISP network," Evers continued.
Rather than worry about losing customers to an OTT service, Cablevision actually issued a press release bringing attention to its second place finish.
"We have a direct connection with the online video provider that ensures superior viewing and more extensive content than any of our competitors can deliver," said Gemma Toner, senior vice president of broadband product management for Cablevision, in the news release. "The most recent Netflix ISP rankings make it clear, if you live in this market and you use Netflix, the top choice is Optimum."
Rounding out the top 10 ISPs were No. 6 Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), which dropped three places and came in at 2.01 Mbps; Mediacom, down one spot at 2 Mbps; Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) at 1.99 Mbps; Cox Communications at 1.96 Mbps; and Bright House Networks at 1.90 Mbps.
