Level 3 Communications, which reported a third-quarter loss of $170 million, hopes it’s found a new moneymaker in a revamped CDN platform it believes can help give consumers an online video experience matching those from traditional TV broadcasts.
The Broomfield, Colo. company, which operates a national fiber-optic network, said it’s merged Adobe’s latest flash media server software with its own HTTP delivery technology creating a stable, scalable environment. The company made the announcement at the 2009 Streaming Media West conference in San Jose, Calif.
"We collaborated closely with Level 3 to integrate the latest Adobe Flash Media Server software into the Level 3 CDN,” said Bill Rusitzky, senior director of global media alliances at Adobe. "The combination of Level 3’s experience and global reach coupled with capabilities like dynamic streaming will provide a superior overall consumer experience that will help increase viewing time and engagement among users.”
Level 3’s CDN combines thousands of servers and hundreds of terabytes of storage with the expansive reach and performance of the Level 3 IP backbone.
"Since more than 75 percent of online video is delivered via Adobe’s Flash Media platform, the decision to partner with Adobe to unify our broadcast-delivery platform was easy,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Product Delivery and Strategy at Level 3.
