Chalk one up for Broomfield, Colo.-based Level 3 Communications . (NASDAQ: LVLT), which has announced that ABC has tapped it to help the broadcaster move masses of video between its New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles ABC News locations across its Tier 1 backbone. Financial details were not made public.
The three-year contract calls for Level 3 to extend its network directly into ABC's New York offices and to install its Managed Video Network Services platform at each location. The tie-in will give ABC direct access to Level 3's Tier 1 Internet backbone, allowing it to scale its services as needed.
With Level 3's MVNS, ABC can distribute video and data from a single platform, allowing it to shipping video content faster among the three news bureaus. It also gives ABC Internet access at speeds up to GigE at its news bureau locations.
"This solution enables ABC News to drive value and efficiency for portions of our newsgathering operation by providing enhanced video and data connectivity at news locations in Los Angles, New York and Washington," said Chris Myers, executive director Operational Newsgathering, ABC News.
Level 3 earlier this month announced upgrades to its Vyvx VenueNet infrastructure that is designed to help broadcasters deliver high-profile events in HD, and even 3D. The company at the time said its investment would focus on upgrading venue services in time for the start of the NFL and NHL seasons this year. By 2011, Level 3 expects to continue upgrading venue services in time for NBA and Major League Baseball seasons.
