House of Cards was among the nominees for best drama, and Orange for outstanding comedy series, in a field heavy with cable-channel selections that included uber-popular HBO shows Game of ThronesTrue Detective and AMC series Breaking Bad. House of Cards also was nominated for outstanding writing for a drama series and outstanding directing, art direction, and cinematography.

Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright were nominated as best lead actor and actress in a drama series for their work on House of Cards.

Ricky Gervais received a nomination as lead actor in a comedy series for Derek, which premiered at the end of May.

But Orange Is The New Black was a darling of the nominating committee, with five actors receiving nods for their work in its landmark first season. Taylor Schilling (Piper) was nominated as outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Orange, along with Kate Mulgrew as outstanding supporting actress. Natasha Lyonne, Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox were nominated as outstanding guest actresses in a comedy series.

Liz Frieman and Jenji Kohan received nods for outstanding writing for a comedy series for Orange's pilot episode, "I Wasn't Ready."  Jodie Foster was nominated as guest director for the first-season episode "Lesbian Request Denied."

Netflix documentary The Square was nominated for the documentary/nonfiction category.

Last year, Netflix became the first online-only content producer to both be nominated for and win an Emmy, with David Fincher taking home the best director award for House of Cards.

Neither Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) nor Hulu shows received any nominations this year, an omission that is likely to change as both providers gear up their original content offerings.
