Scripps, Turner in multiscreen content ventures

Scripps Network Interactive and Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) are moving full-stream-ahead into pushing their content across multiple screens to multiple devices. The content providers announced separate efforts to manipulate and distribute traditional cable content so it can be enjoyed in a newly emerging multiscreen environment.

Scripps, which distributes cable channels like the Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Cooking Channel and DIY Network, chose Clearleap to "quickly prepare archived and current TV programs for distribution to TV Everywhere and video-on-demand platforms" with full compliance with the Nielsen C3 ratings, the two companies said.

The Clearleap software platform "gives us an efficient, economical way to increase significantly the volume of content distributed to wireless devices, PCs and the home television, while gaining valuable commercial ratings points for viewing on all the platforms that Nielsen manages," Tamara Franklin, Scripps' senior vice president of affiliate relations and new media distributions, said in the news release.

The Clearleap technology captures live telecasts from Scripps' Knoxville, Tenn., broadcast center, processes network programs for viewing in multiple formats and watermarks commercial ad spots to capture ratings data generated during the 75-hour window after shows are first telecast, the companies said.

Turner, a Time Warner (NYSE: TWC) company, has expanded its relationship with Digital Rapids to include the Kayak dynamic workflow platform as a foundation for its media processing operations for current and multiscreen video initiatives, the two companies said.

Turner said it will use the Digital Rapids technology to process and transform content for multi-platform distribution, including multi-stage image processing and transcoding and packaging the media into the multiple formats required by a plethora of connected devices.

Turner has customized the Kayak components to enable "seamless integration with… existing business systems," Brooks Tobey, senior vice president of sales solutions and multiscreen development and delivery at Turner, said in a news release.

Of particular importance is the ability to "efficiently process and deliver content from our news and entertainment services across a wide array of consumer platforms," added Keith Chandler, Turner's vice president of media and multi-platform operations.
