Sony signs 20 more CBS affiliates for PlayStation Vue

Playstation Vue

Sony has established an industry-leading niche among operators of virtual MVPD by adding 20 more CBS affiliate stations to PlayStation Vue’s lineup.

The addition of the smaller market stations means that Vue can deliver live feeds of local stations in about half of its national footprint. Markets without these affiliate deals in place can only stream on-demand programming from the CBS network.

Neither AT&T’s DirecTV Now nor Dish Network’s Sling TV—the two currently available competing v-MVPD platforms—have a deal in place even for CBS owned and operated stations.

Webinar: Remote Post Production In The Cloud

Video production companies across the world have traditionally been tethered to physical facilities, but with the advent of covid-19, remote post production capabilities are more important than ever. Join this webinar to learn more about how video producers can utilize Google Cloud infrastructure, along with partner applications, to develop a remote post production suite that brings your artists and editors together, no matter where they are.

It's the first time for any of the three currently available major v-MVPD platforms that such a comprehensive list of smaller affiliates has been signed. The deals were undoubtedly aided by the fact that CBS Corp. has already introduced a working livestreaming business model to its affiliate partners through the CBS All Access SVOD platform, which is fully distributed across CBS' broadcast footprint.

For its part, Vue is still reliant on owned and operated stations for ABC, FOX and NBC, meaning it’s still only able to livestream feeds in those networks in larger local markets that have an owned and operated station.

Still, Sony shared the list of stations it has signed up for each network, and it’s ahead of the pack:
