Walmart puts Vudu on homepage to drive streaming business

Video-on-demand vendor Vudu is moving up. The streaming video service is getting a place on owner Walmart's Web homepage-Walmart.com--as the retailer tries to position the service for growth against other companies in the space like Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes and Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN) Prime service.

Vudu, which Walmart purchased last year, offers movie and TV titles on computers and Playstation 3 game consoles as well as several connected TVs and Blu-ray players.

Vudu GM Edward Lichty said Walmart shoppers increasingly are driving the divisions business, adding that Vudu has seen its user base triple in size since Christmas.

"Our value proposition is to be the price leader in an industry and it's no different in this business," said Steve Nave, president of Walmart.com. "We will always make sure that we're the price leader so if a competitor does something we'll make sure that we're still leading."

Vudu's rents movies for between $1 and $6.99. Users canbuy movies for $4.99 to $19.99 for regular titles and $11.99 to $21.99 for 3D movies.
