YouTube TV adds 10 more markets, 9 with live local broadcast

YouTube TV has effectively tripled its reach, adding 10 more markets to the five it was already operating in.

The new markets are Washington, D.C.; Houston, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Phoenix, Arizona; Detroit, Michigan; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; Miami-Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

Those new markets joins the metro areas in which YouTube TV was already available: Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

According to TechCrunch, live local streaming for ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC will be available in all the new markets except Dallas-Fort Worth, where CBS, FOX and NBC are available but ABC is only available as on-demand.

YouTube TV last month revealed the upcoming expansion into new markets. The service was announced in March—to a somewhat tepid response—and officially launched in April.

Priced at $35 per month, YouTube TV includes the four major broadcasters and their affiliated regional sports networks and cable networks. Since its launch, the service has added channels from AMC.

Like Hulu’s live TV service, YouTube TV has been focused on providing broadcast networks, and it’s left out deals with major cable programmers like Viacom and Discovery Communications.

Turner CEO John Martin said that YouTube TV politely declined Turner’s offer to let the virtual MVPD carry its channels including CNN, TBS and TNT.

“We said, 'We would like you to carry us,' and they said, 'No,'" Martin told investors at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications, according to Forbes.
