Disney+ launches on Cox Contour TV and Stream Player

Cable provider Cox will make the Disney+ app available to its video subscribers through its Contour TV and Contour Stream Player.

Disney+, which can be accessed through the Contour voice remote, is the latest third-party streaming service integration for Cox. The company also offers Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock and Amazon Prime Video on its pay TV devices.

“We’re committed to growing our Contour and Contour Stream Player libraries to deliver the best entertainment available to our TV customers,” said Mark Greatrex, incoming president at Cox Communications, in a statement.  “Disney+ is packed with beloved classics and new, original content to bring families and friends together.”

“Making Disney+ easily accessible to subscribers is central to our distribution strategy,” said Michael Paull, president of Disney+ and ESPN+, in a statement. “By delivering this native app experience to Cox Contour customers, we continue to expand our footprint across all screens and devices.”

Cox doesn’t regularly release video subscriber totals but, according to an estimate from the Leichtman Research Group, the company ended the third quarter with 3.46 million video subscribers. That means Cox could help spark some incremental subscriber growth for Disney+.

Disney+ added just 2.1 million new subscribers during the third quarter—taking its total to just over 118 million—and saw its ARPU drop slightly to $4.12. During a Goldman Sachs investor conference in September, CEO Bob Chapek predicted that Disney+ subscribers would increase by “low single-digit millions” during his company’s fiscal fourth quarter, compared to the more than 12 million subscribers added during Disney’s fiscal third quarter.

In the wake of the company’s most recent earnings, some industry analysts re-evaluated Disney’s forecast for its two-year-old streaming service, which it predicted would have between 230 million and 260 million subscribers by 2024.
