Hulu intros $1 per month promo on ad-supported tier for National Streaming Day

To kick off National Streaming Day Hulu introduced a promo for new and eligible returning customers, offering its ad-supported plan for $1 per month for the first three months.

It represents an 85% discount on the service, which regularly costs $6.99 per month. It’s a limited time promo and only runs one week, through May 27.

Hulu touted access to new original premieres including “The Kardashians,” season two of “Only Murders in The Building” and “The Valet.”

Adding to its content lineup, the streaming service also recently expanded a partnership with Live Nation for exclusive livestreams of music festival events through 2023. Those include Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, and Austin City Limits.

In April, Hulu accounted for 3.3% of total TV viewing time, according to Nielsen’s The Guage.  Hulu ended the first quarter with 45.6 million subscribers, including 41.4 million for SVOD and 4.1 million for Hulu Live TV + SVOD.

As for its ad-supported tier, Hulu was early on the scene with the first AVOD platform and this week Disney executives said they’ll be leaning on success and learnings from the Hulu team to help set the foundation for the forthcoming ad-supported tier on Disney+.

Hulu’s AVOD tier is popular with consumers, outpacing the number of subscribers than the SVOD tier, according to Disney CFO Christine McCarthy.

"We actually have more AVOD than SVOD subscribers [at Hulu]," McCarthy said during a MoffettNathanson investor conference on Wednesday. "We think that will probably, we expect about the same percentage for Disney+ and Hulu just based on the experience curve that we've witnessed."

In other National Streaming Day promos, Philo is offering $10 off the first month of its service, which usually costs $25 per month for more than 60 channels. The Philo discount is available to new customers and those in the trial period, and can be applied using the coupon code STREAM. It runs from May 20 through May 31.
