Hulu, Sling TV and others get aggressive with Black Friday deals

Hulu, Sling TV and a host of other streaming video companies are rolling out aggressive promotions to coincide with Black Friday.

Hulu is bringing back the same steeply discounted offer as last year. Starting at midnight on Thanksgiving Day (November 25) and running through Monday, November 29, new and eligible returning subscribers can subscribe to Hulu’s ad-supported plan for 99¢ per month for a year. The company said it represents $72 in annual savings over its regular $6.99/month rate.

AMC+, which packages original series from AMC and sister networks like SundanceTV and IFC, ad-free with early premieres on demand, along with the streaming services Shudder and Sundance Now, is rolling out a similar limited time offer. The company is selling its streaming service (which normally retails for $8.99/month) for $1.99/month for a year.

Sling TV is offering a promotion running November 26-29 where subscribers who pay for a month of either Sling Orange or Sling Blue for $35 (or both for $50) will get additional month free. Fellow virtual MVPD Philo is also celebrating the shopping holiday by selling the first month of its service for $5 ($20 off) to new subscribers starting November 25 and running through December 1. And while it doesn’t appear to be specifically tied to Black Friday, YouTube TV right now is only charging $14.99 for the first month of service (normally $64.99) for new subscribers.

Over at Amazon Prime Video Channels, users can get several different subscription video services including Discovery+, Showtime, Starz, Epix, Noggin, PBS Masterpiece, Britbox and Paramount+ for 99¢ per month for two months. Consumers can also just sign up directly at Paramount+ and get the first month of service free and directly at Discovery+ to get the service for 99¢ per month for three months.

Streaming device makers are obviously getting in on Black Friday, too. Roku this year is introducing the LE, a $15 streaming player exclusive to Walmart. From now until December 5, Amazon will be knocking $12 off the Fire TV Stick Lite, $20 off the Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen), $25 off the Fire TV Stick with 4K Ultra HD and Alexa Voice Remote, $20 off the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, $40 off the Fire TV Cube and $100 off the Fire TV DVR hardware. And Google has lowered the price of its Chromecast with Google TV by $10, down to $40.
