Liberty Global taps Teltoo’s peer-to-peer CDN for improved video quality

European pay TV operator Liberty Global is bringing on Teltoo as a peer-to-peer content delivery network (CDN) partner to improve live streaming video quality on its platform.

Liberty Global has operations in six European countries under the consumer brands Virgin Media, Telenet and UPC. The company will use Teltoo in addition to its current CDN partners to deliver reliable live streams as demand for online video increases.

“This partnership is a pivotal moment for the streaming space as it is the first instance of a peer-to-peer CDN partnering with a tier one operator,” said Pablo Hesse, founder and CEO of Teltoo, in a statement. “We will deliver the support and quality necessary to help Liberty Global continue to deliver a high-quality streaming service for customers.”

The agreement with Liberty Global will help Teltoo expand into new markets like the United Kingdom, which the company said currently is the most prominent market for streaming after the U.S.

For Liberty Global, the partnership comes as Horizon 4 – its next-generation entertainment platform that’s already serving customers in The Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland – is getting set to launch across additional Liberty Global markets in 2020.

“As our industry evolves, Liberty Global has been a leader in pioneering ways for people to consume video services inside and outside their homes,” said Phil Sellick, director of video innovation at Liberty Global, in a statement. “By working with Teltoo as our peer-to-peer CDN, we have another tool to enable us to offer reliable video streaming for our customers when and where they want it.”

Teltoo has received funding from Liberty Global along with Telefonica, UpRamp and CableLabs.
