NAB opens media production studio in D.C.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has opened up a new media production studio and hub, which it plans to use to create national spots and branded educational content for its members.

The NAB Studio is located at the organization’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It features a curved, 15-foot interactive video wall, energy-saving LED lighting, robotic cameras and an edit suite touting 8K post-production capabilities.

NAB also plans to rent out the studio and its staff to external organizations that want to utilize the setup for original productions.

The interactive video wall was built with help from Planar and will be used as a backdrop for live and pre-recorded programming. A slate of additional companies, including equipment and studio design services for content creation and management, contributed to the buildout with donations for tech gear and services.

Those include Angry Badger Productions, Vitec Productions Solutions, Barbizon Lighting Company, PESA, the Launch Group, Video Visions, Magis Media, and the Light Source. Contributions range from lighting design to studio systems integration and scenic and set fabrication.

Leading the new studio is Emmy-winning producer and VP of Media Production Michael Khatcheressian. In addition to the national spots and educational content, NAB will also be creating digital stories for its trade shows and award programs. This year’s NAB Show is set to kick off later this month on April 23 in Las Vegas.  The studio will also be used to produce NAB’s Congressional PSA Campaign and the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Awards.

“As the premier trade association representing America’s radio and television broadcasters and as the producer of the world’s largest convention for media and entertainment, NAB has a critical need for advanced audio and video production capabilities,” said April Carty Sipp, executive vice president of Industry Affairs at NAB, in a statement. “We are grateful for the generous support of the companies that contributed to the buildout of our new studio and media hub.”
