Peloton drafts Amazon’s help to launch streaming app for TVs

Peloton is teaming up with Amazon to launch a streaming TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices and smart TVs in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada.

The app – which, for now, will be exclusively available to Fire TV’s more than 37 million active users – will give Peloton’s 1.6 million subscribers access to a library of fitness content that covers workout disciplines including cycling, running, strength, yoga, meditation, stretching, bootcamp and cardio.

The Peloton app can be controlled via the Fire TV remote and Amazon Alexa voice commands that work through the voice remote, a paired Echo device or the 2nd-generation Fire TV Cube.

Existing Peloton subscribers can access the app at no additional cost. New users can sign up for a free 30-day trial and then pay $12.99/month after that. The Peloton app on Fire TV does not require the Peloton bike or tread but certain classes require additional weights, yoga mats and other equipment.

The Peloton App will be available on Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV (3rd Gen Pendant design), Fire TV Cube (1st Gen) and the new Fire TV Cube. It will also be available on Insignia and Toshiba Fire TV Edition Smart TVs and Fire TV Edition sound bars. The Peloton App is not compatible with Fire TV (1st and 2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick (1st Gen).

Amazon’s deal with Peloton is similar to the agreement the company set with Discovery Inc. to earlier this year launch the Food Network Kitchen streaming service. Food Network Kitchen relies on Amazon Alexa to provide hands-free controls for users and will incorporate e-commerce and food delivery features that take advantage of Amazon services.
