TCL claims massive sales of TV sets running Google TV and Android TV

Despite some recent hiccups with the Google TV platform on its smart TVs, TCL has claimed to be one of the biggest sellers of sets featuring Google’s connected TV operating system.

During this week’s CES event in Las Vegas, the manufacturer said that it sells more than 10 million sets worldwide that run either Android TV or Google TV annually.

“TCL has also worked closely with Google to introduce the newest smart TV experience with Google TV. New features like hands-free voice control with Google Assistant, a content-first home screen and innovative ways to discover content has enriched TCL’s television lineup,” the company said in a statement.

TCL—which also builds smart TVs that run Roku’s operating system—was one of the first third-party manufacturing partners announced alongside Google TV in late 2020.

In December, Best Buy halted sales of TCL Google TV smart TVs following complaints about user interface performance. However, the issues were resolved within weeks and sales started back up.

“Recent software updates have allowed us to make significant improvements on the stability and speed of the TCL televisions featuring Google TV,” the company said in a statement obtained by The Verge. “With these updates, this product now represents the powerful performance that TCL and Google believe is the future of TV.”

In addition to touting its work with platform partners, TCL is also using CES to drum up excitement for new display technologies on its smart TVs. The company is working with Pixelworks to add its TrueCut Motion features to TV models in North America. TrueCut Motion includes a new content delivery format, device certification program for guaranteeing “filmmaker-approved output,” and content creator tools for using motion.

“With TrueCut Motion technology, viewers can witness this incredible motion, consistently presented the way the filmmaker intended, without adjusting settings on the TV remote. The addition of TrueCut Motion along with features like 4K and HDR mean that viewers will have a home theater experience unlike anything previously imaginable,” the company said.
