Comscore names finance chief Jon Carpenter as CEO, appoints new CFO

Comscore announced Wednesday that Jon Carpenter has been named as the company’s chief executive officer, effective today. Carpenter has held the role of CFO at Comscore since November 2021.

Coinciding with Carpenter’s appointment, Mary Margret Curry, Comcscore’s current chief accounting officer, was promoted to chief financial officer and treasurer.

Comscore said the announcement follows a full search of external and internal candidates for the CEO role, which got underway earlier in 2022 when CEO Bill Livek announced plans to retire.

In addition, Dr. Nana Banerjee has been named non-executive chairman of the board, while Brent Rosenthal will continue to be lead director.

Carpenter takes the helm of the media measurement and data company after earlier posts at major industry players, including SVP of finance at Nielsen and CFO of media distribution and production services at NBCUniversal. Most recently he held the CFO position at Publishers Clearing House (PCH), and earlier served as CFO for Sears Holding Corporation. In addition to finance chief while at PCH, Carpenter also had operating responsibility for growing and accelerating its digital advertising business both organically and through strategic acquisitions.

Banerjee said in a statement that he’s excited and confident in Comscore’s future under Carpenter’s leadership.

“Jon’s strong operational focus, strategic acumen, and experience driving both growth and profitability are exactly what we need for Comscore’s next chapter. In addition to his background in finance, as well as in media and measurement sectors, Jon brings a customer-centric ethos,” said Banerjee.

“Along with the rest of the board, I am committed to working with Jon and the rest of the management team to help accelerate Comscore’s growth trajectory and achieve its full potential,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Curry is taking over as CFO following more than a decade with Comcscore – first as global tax director in 2011. Since then she’s held a number of roles of increasing scope and responsibility, including SVP and controller. Prior to Comscore, Curry spent nine years with KPMG.

“Mary Margaret brings deep Comscore knowledge and financial expertise to the CFO role, and I look forward to continuing to partner with her as we execute on our strategic plan,“ said Carpenter in a statement. “Comscore has been a groundbreaker since its founding, and I believe we’re just getting started in our next chapter. I know that I join the rest of the Comscore team in thanking Bill not just for his leadership and many contributions to Comscore, but also to the industry, and I am grateful we will have his continued involvement on the board.”

Comscore in recent weeks scored a win with Horizon Media, one of the world’s largest privately-held media services agencies, which tapped the company to provide local TV viewership data for buying and planning. The move came after Horizon Media in April said it would seek to incorporate different measurement sources, working with companies like Paramount Global, NBCUniversal and the Allen Media Group on tools to move away from single-source measurement.
