Avail-TVN rolls out multiplatform IPTV service for Cable & Wireless in Caribbean

Digital media services company Avail-TVN, which announced a TV Everywhere platform this summer and currently is trialing it with several providers in the U.S., today said Cable & Wireless Communications chose it to provide the multiplatform IPTV service for CWC's Caribbean subsidiary, LIME.

Avail-TVN's service, AnyView, is scheduled to launch commercially in Jamaica and Barbados in the fourth quarter, with rollouts to nearly a dozen additional islands scheduled to follow. And, said Avail-TVN COO Jon Romm, the technology could expand to more than three dozen CWC markets.

"We're excited about this, it's a good project for us in so many different ways," Romm told FierceIPTV. AnyView sets up operators with the infrastructure to provide a true TV Anywhere experience.

"It's a great test of the multiple ecosystems and interoperability we're going to have to deal with," Romm said. "In our minds, it's a validation of an end-to-end TV watching experience."

The service is already being deployed to a portion of the 130,000 households to which the company plans to offer the service to in Jamaica and Barbados. The rest of the rollout is on a fairly aggressive schedule, he said.

"We anticipate a fairly steep roll out to all of LIME's footprint," he said. LIME is the leading full-service telecom provider in the Caribbean. It delivers landline, Internet, mobile and entertainment services to 14 Caribbean countries, but currently doesn't offer video services.

Using adaptive bitrate (ABR) technology, Avail-TVN will provide up to 130 live SD television channels-49 of which are international channels that Avail-TVN previously didn't offer--as well as video on-demand content for LIME customers to access via set-top boxes and connected devices. Avail-TVN will also manage the subscriber experience, providing the user interface and electronic program guideand monitoring broadcasts 24/7 from the company's Network Operations Center. The service will be delivered via LIME's private broadband network.
