Cable & Wireless takes Freewire beyond campuses

London telecom Cable & Wireless cut a deal to expand IPTV distribution for Freewire, a subsidiary of Welsh telecom, Inuk Networks. Valued at US$141 million over five years, the agreement will extend the reach of Freewire from the 100,000 dorm rooms on 40 U.K. campuses it now reaches to roughly 2.3 million students living off-campus.

According to C&W financial results, the company had 1.9 million fixed lines and 400,000 broadband customers as of March 31.

C&W pulled out of the consumer market in 2000 but remains Great Britain's third largest IP provider for the FTSE 350.
