Comcast Xi3 client boxes now support live-TV buffering

Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) has confirmed an upgrade to its X1 platform that will allow subscribers to pause, rewind and fast-forward live TV on Xi3 client boxes.

The upgrade, first discovered by Multichannel News, allows the Xi3 to buffer 25 minutes of live television. X1 customers--and pay-TV subscribers in general--have long desired client boxes that are capable of DVR functionality.

According to Comcast, the feature is now available to all current and new X1 customers.

The Pace-manufactured Xi3 is an IP-based device designed to be used as a companion to Comast's XG1 HD-DVR. It doesn't have a hard drive, but manages to buffer video using an integrated SD memory card.

Comcast began deploying the boxes last year.
